Description

The New Forest National Park Authority, Natural England and Forestry Commission are working together to convene experts and stakeholders to produce a Protected Site Strategy (PSS) and Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for deer management for the New Forest National Park and surrounding area.

A critical component of enabling sustainable deer management is the effective utilisation of venison. A well-functioning venison supply chain can help offset management costs, create economic incentives, and support local food systems and rural economies.

However, the venison supply chain in and around the New Forest is currently perceived as underdeveloped, with constraints in processing capacity, market access, coordination, and demand.

This commission seeks to understand the economics of deer management as a whole system, with a particular focus on the role and potential of the venison supply chain as a key lever for improving outcomes.
