DIRECT AWARD JUSTIFICATION

Current simulation systems are provided by Kongsberg Maritime.

The specialist hardware equipment and software is designed to operate with K-Sim Nav &

Eng operating system which is currently running in all simulator facilities. Hardware and

Software could be sourced from an alternative supplier but it would mean having to

replace much of the simulation suite at a cost in the region of £4-5m.

The current simulators have been used for an extensive period of time. During that time a

very large library has been developed of hydrodynamic ship models and 3D geographic

database areas, nearly all developed for specific clients who expect to be able to use

them when they require training. These areas and models are only compatible with

Kongsberg simulation and are developed using Kongsberg software tools.

All the exercises developed over this extensive time period are also only compatible with

Kongsberg simulation.

Tyne Coast College holds the IP and for this software development. It would take many

months, if not years, to recreate this development if the College moved to another

simulation provider.
