Description
Northumbrian Water and Essex & Suffolk Water are part of Northumbrian Water Limited (NWL), which is a
member of Northumbrian Water Group (NWG). NWL operates in the north east of England, where it trades as
Northumbrian Water, and in the south east of England, where it trades as Essex & Suffolk Water.
Northumbrian water currently provides water to 2.5 million people and sewerage services to 2.7 million people
and Essex & Suffolk Water provides water services to 1.8 million people.
A combined area of 12.260 sq. km covered, NWL operates and maintains a water mains network of over 25,000
km (incorporating 57 water treatment works) and a network of over 15,000 km of public sewers (including 416
wastewater treatment works).
NWL has a requirement for the provision of Odour Control Chemical at Sewage Treatment Works (STWs),
including Hendon STW (sludge treatment centre). Hendon are permitted by Environmental Agency (EA). In
order to comply with the permit requirements, robust odour management and treatment processes must be
adopted. The Contract is for the provision of sodium chlorite 25% strength for Hendon Docks to be used on
wastewater sludge prior to its dewatering in the centrifuge to kill odours.
As part of the supply of chemical NWL also require the appointed supplier to provide automated dosing
equipment which ensures NWL dose efficiently and can track usage and predict future delivery requirements.
