1Ru-106 eye applicators are ophthalmic brachytherapy plaques used primarily for treating uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, and other ocular tumors. They consist of a thin film of Ru-106 beta-emitting isotope, encapsulated in pure silver sheets, with a total thickness of only 1 mm, making them easy to handle and position on the eye surface. The beta radiation has a limited range, allowing high doses to tumors up to 5 mm in thickness while sparing sensitive structures like the optic disc and fovea.
