The key role for the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) is to carry out the statutory annual canvass of electors, invite electors to register, confirm successful registrations – the Representation of the People Acts prescribe that certain communications from the ERO must be sent by post. Where there is no statutory requirement the ERO uses email where consent has been granted.
